CURRICULUM

~DRAWING & PAINTING~

"First you draw what you see.
Next, you draw what you know,
and only then will you know what it is that you see."

-Robert Beverly Hale-

This quote sums up the basic approach I take to teaching all disciplines; sculpture, drawing and painting.

___

If you think you are simply drawing what it is that you see, you might be surprised to see what it is that you have actually drawn.
Many of today's methods teach the first half of this concept but fail to go beyond and teach the student what it is that he/she is actually seeing. By visually breaking an object down into simple abstract forms, one is then able to retrain the eye and remove many preconceived notions of how the untrained eye sees an object in nature. This simple process begins to teach the student to see objects in a new way, and allows the student to visually reconstruct an item in a more objective manner.

~SCULPTURE~

The sculpture classes will focus on the fundamental concepts of balance and gesture, as well as traditional techniques of structure and proper proportions. These concepts are essential for rendering the figure in three dimensions. Artists that focus on two-dimensional work will also find these techniques useful in the accurate modeling of the human form. The class will consist of direct observation using a live model, augmented with study of the human skeleton and anatomy books.

I prefer that all students work with oil-based clay. Using soft, pliable clay enables the student to better capture the gesture. Sculpture is hard enough without fighting with your materials. Students will be able to use harder clay in the final details if warranted.

I will provide each student with the basic supporting structure for the armature. Working from this primary armature the students will then be expected to complete the secondary armature (or manikin) that will support the actual figure in clay.

SUPPLIES

~TOOLS & SUPPLIES FOR DRAWING & PAINTING CLASSES~

  • Tools and Supplies:
·Typically an 16" x 20" or 18" x 24" drawing pad is best. A white or off white paper that will accept charcoal.
--If you have something close to that size, it should work fine.

·The students will need a variety of charcoal pencils and vine charcoal sticks.
--The soft variety usually work best.

·A kneaded eraser is an invaluable tool for removing charcoal.

·A plumb line is a very useful tool (simply a small weight on a string 18" - 24" long)
    --A fishing weight work well.

·A small hand-held mirror (approx size 4"x 6" or larger)

·Students should have a small travel size sketch book for homework and daily sketching- it's fun!.
  • Suppliers:
Utrecht Art Supply in Salt Lake should have everything you need at a reasonable price.

~TOOLS & SUPPLIES FOR ALL SCULPTURE CLASSES & WORKSHOPS~

I have collected a few sculpture tools in my studio that students may use during class.
If you would like to wait to purchase tools until after the first class, I can show students what to look for in good sculpting tools. Below are a few recommendation for general tools and clays.

  • Tools and Supplies:
    · Several sizes of wire loop tools (preferably not pottery tools), sometimes they are referred to as rakes.
    · Several different shapes of wooden tools (these can be pottery based tools).
    · Medium-sized sculpture caliper tool (if you plan to have only one pair).
    · Plumb line - 2 to 3 feet of string with a weight (a fishing weight works well).
    · 2 pairs of pliers or cutters for manipulating the armature wire.
    · Aluminum armature wire 1/8"( plastic coated electrical wire will work also).

Don't go overboard - remember your hands are your best tools!

  • Clay: Oil based, plastalina clay, (Chavant, J.F. McLaughlin or Roma are good recommendations). The McLaughlin clay has turned out to be wonderful clay to work with. I will have some of this clay on hand that the students can purchase from me directly. (Please let me know ahead of time if you would like to use this clay).
If you are going to use Chavant I have found that the La Beau Touche HM is one of the better.

The Roma clay comes in different hardnesses try to get the softest-- either a 1 or a 2.

  • Suppliers: Adonis Bronze here in Utah is the best place to find good tools at fair prices. Adonis Bronze is located at 450 S Alpine HWY in Alpine. Tel. 801.763.9700 Fax. 801.763.9799 www.adonisbronze.com They have a great selection of tools and supplies as well as a complete line of Chavant clays.
  • Utrecht Art Supply in Salt Lake has # 2 Roma clay available as well as some basic supplies at a reasonable price. They are located at 1025 E 2100 S. The phone Number is 832-0400.
  • Reuels in Salt Lake also sells clay. I believe they carry Chavant NSP and "Professional". They also carry Roma in several different hardnesses. I have noticed that they are beginning to carry a much better selection of sculpting tools, including nice loop tools. Their prices on these tools are very competitive.
  • On-line I have found the best source to be Sculpture House. They have a wonderful selection of tools and clays, as well as armature wire and already made manikins.
  • Also, I have found The Compleat Sculptor to be a very good site.
