Varnishing an oil painting: How to make a cold wax medium to reduce the gloss for your Gamvar varnish. Add 2 ounces of Gamsol to 1 tbsp. of Gamblin cold wax medium. I slowly add the Gamsol to the wax as I mix it with a palette knife. When its mixed evenly I run it trough some cheese cloth just to remove any small parts of wax that didn't dissolve. Keep it in a sealed jar. Add this mixture to your Gamvar to get your desired sheen. I mix it approx. 1 part wax medium to 4 parts Gamvar. Gamblin also makes their varnish in matte and satin. But I still like this mixture best.
